ACF-UA Calls on President Mohler to Reject Divestment
Dear President Mohler:
I am deeply concerned by the recent demands from Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at UA, particularly their call for the university to boycott and divest from companies with ties to Israel. I urge you to reject these demands, as doing so would protect the campus environment and the well-being of Jewish, Israeli, and pro-Israel students.
Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) campaigns are widely recognized as fostering hostility toward Jewish and pro-Israel students on campuses. Implementing BDS at UA would likely increase antisemitic incidents and create an atmosphere of fear and intimidation for Jewish and pro-Israel students.
The BDS movement is rooted in a discriminatory ideology that delegitimizes Israel and promotes narratives that isolate Jewish students. By opposing BDS, the university would demonstrate its commitment to pluralism and community solidarity, ensuring all students are respected and included.
With antisemitism rising on college campuses, it is essential for the university to take a firm stand against hate and discrimination, as seen at institutions such as Boston University, the University of Maine System, and Yale University. Meeting these student demands could have legal implications, since Alabama prohibits the use of state funds to support BDS activities.
I urge you to prioritize the safety and well-being of all UA students by rejecting SJP’s demands. This action will uphold the university's commitment to a campus where all students feel respected and valued.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
