ACF Applauds Brown University’s Rejection of Divestment but Raises Concerns about Vote

New York, NY – Alums for Campus Fairness (ACF) commends the Brown University Corporation’s decision to reject a student-led proposal to divest the university’s endowment from 10 companies described as facilitating “the Israeli occupation of Palestinian Territory.” This decision reaffirms Brown’s commitment to academic freedom while rejecting calls for measures that target one nation or group of people.

However, ACF is concerned that holding the vote on divestment lends undue credibility to a divisive and harmful initiative during a time of skyrocketing campus antisemitism. While we respect the importance of free expression and debate, BDS unfairly singles out the world’s only Jewish state, contributes to a harsh campus climate for Jewish, Israeli, and pro-Israel students, and ignores countries with actual human rights violations. ACF calls upon the Brown Corporation to advance a resolution barring future politicized divestment proposals.

“Brown must remain a place where all students — regardless of their backgrounds or political beliefs — feel safe, welcome, and supported. Ensuring that Jewish and pro-Israel students are not marginalized or silenced is crucial to maintaining the university’s commitment to equity and diversity,” said Naomi Reinharz, ACF-Brown Chapter Leader.
