ACF Applauds Wisconsin for Adopting IHRA Definition of Antisemitism

Alums for Campus Fairness (ACF) applauds Gov. Tony Evers and the state of Wisconsin for officially codifying the IHRA definition of antisemitism into law. On Friday, March 27, Governor Evers signed Assembly Bill 446 (now Wisconsin Act 143), following its passage by both the Wisconsin Senate and State Assembly.

With this action, Wisconsin becomes the 38th state to adopt the IHRA definition, a widely recognized standard for identifying and addressing antisemitism. The law provides a clear and consistent framework for state and local governmental entities to evaluate discriminatory intent and respond more effectively to incidents of antisemitism.

Importantly, the IHRA definition makes clear that criticism of Israel, similar to that leveled against any other country, is not inherently antisemitic. This distinction ensures that the definition can be applied thoughtfully while still protecting free expression.

ACF views this legislation as a meaningful step toward strengthening protections for the Jewish community and promoting accountability. Establishing a consistent standard fosters safer, more inclusive environments, particularly on college campuses where antisemitism has been on the rise.
