ACF Calls for Accountability Following Politicized Remarks at University of Michigan Commencement

Alums for Campus Fairness (ACF) is closely monitoring developments at the University of Michigan after outgoing Faculty Senate Chair Derek Peterson used his commencement remarks to praise pro-Palestinian student activists. During the ceremony, Peterson commended activists who, “over the past two years, opened our hearts to the injustice and inhumanity of Israel’s war in Gaza,” inserting political commentary into an event intended to celebrate graduates.

University President Domenico Grasso responded, calling the remarks “inappropriate,” “hurtful, and insensitive to many members of our community,” and emphasizing that they do not reflect the university’s institutional position. The university further noted that Peterson’s delivered remarks deviated from the speech he had originally submitted for approval.

In his statement, President Grasso expressed regret for the impact of the comments and reiterated that commencement should be a moment of unity rather than a platform for personal or political expression. He indicated that the university will review and refine its commencement procedures moving forward, but did not announce any disciplinary action.

ACF acknowledges the university’s recognition that the remarks were inappropriate, but emphasizes that acknowledgment alone is insufficient. Universities must ensure that policies governing official events are enforced consistently, particularly when those events are disrupted by unauthorized political messaging.

ACF calls on the University of Michigan to conduct a thorough review of the incident, determine whether university policies were violated, and take appropriate action to ensure accountability. Clear standards and consequences are essential to maintaining trust and ensuring that milestone events like commencement remain inclusive, respectful, and free from divisive political advocacy.
