ACF Condemns ASUCI’s Handling of Holocaust Remembrance Resolution

Alums for Campus Fairness (ACF) condemns the actions taken by the Associated Students of the University of California, Irvine (ASUCI) during a recent Senate meeting that significantly altered a student-led resolution intended to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27.

Jewish student leaders worked to introduce a resolution recognizing the Holocaust and honoring its victims through education and remembrance. However, the resolution was delayed and ultimately weakened after some student senators claimed that referencing UCI’s Jewish student organizations, including Hillel and Chabad, made the resolution “too political.” In the amendment process, ASUCI removed educational materials from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Yad Vashem, and UCI courses on antisemitism and the Holocaust. The Senate also eliminated references to the documented rise in antisemitism over the past two years, all Jewish student organizations on campus, and the student authorship from Hillel at UCI.

Despite objections from Jewish students, the amended resolution was passed unanimously.

ACF affirms that Holocaust remembrance is not political. It is an act of education, historical responsibility, and moral clarity. By stripping the resolution of its educational content, institutional context, and Jewish representation, ASUCI silenced Jewish student voices and removed critical meaning from what should have been a moment of collective remembrance and solidarity.

ACF stands firmly with Jewish students at UCI. We call on ASUCI to reconsider its decision and to adopt a meaningful resolution that honors the memory of Holocaust victims, respects Jewish student leadership, and commits to a campus where every student belongs and feels represented.
