ACF Monitoring Michigan Regent Race Following SEIU Endorsement Withdrawal

4/20 Update: At the Michigan Democratic Party’s statewide convention on April 19, delegates nominated Amir Makled for the University of Michigan Board of Regents, choosing him over incumbent Regent Jordan Acker. Acker was not renominated despite his efforts to uphold campus accountability, including supporting disciplinary action against students involved in violence and intimidation and opposing divestment from Israel. His Democratic colleague, Paul Brown, who holds similar positions to Aker, was renominated.

Alums for Campus Fairness (ACF) is closely monitoring developments in the race for the University of Michigan Board of Regents after SEIU Michigan withdrew its endorsement of candidate Amir Makled.

The decision follows a report that Makled deleted social media posts praising the terrorist group Hezbollah. Makled, an attorney based in Dearborn, is seeking one of two Democratic nominations for the Board of Regents.

The seats up for election are currently held by Jordan Acker and Paul Brown. Makled’s campaign has specifically targeted Acker, who is Jewish and has faced antisemitic harassment and vandalism at both his home and office.

The nominees for this statewide Democratic position will be selected at the Michigan Democratic Party convention in Detroit on Sunday, April 19. Individuals seeking positions of influence within university governance should be held to high standards, particularly when issues of antisemitism and extremism are involved.
