ACF on the University of Washington’s Cancellation of Hasan Piker Event

Alums for Campus Fairness (ACF) welcomes the University of Washington’s decision to cancel an upcoming event featuring political commentator and streamer Hasan Piker.

The university announced that the event was canceled after determining that “the process for organizing this event did not meet the necessary level of rigor for university-hosted events in the speaker series.” The university stated that, as a result, the event will not be held.

While the university’s stated reason for the cancellation was administrative, ACF welcomes the outcome given Piker’s long history of antisemitic and anti-Israel commentary, as well as rhetoric that has drawn widespread concern. University-sponsored speaker series should maintain standards that reflect the values and responsibilities of the entire campus community.

ACF will continue to follow how UW approaches its speaker series and whether future invitations receive the same level of scrutiny. The university should ensure that its programming reflects a commitment to a safe, respectful, and inclusive campus environment for all students.
