ACF Raises Concerns After Student Senate Targets Hillel at The New School

Alums for Campus Fairness (ACF) is closely monitoring developments at The New School after its student government voted on May 1 to declare the campus Hillel chapter “not in good standing” and attempt to bar it from receiving student funding, co-sponsorship, and other support.

The resolution cited Hillel’s affiliation with Israel-related programming, including volunteer opportunities and Birthright trips, raising serious concerns about the targeting of a Jewish student organization based on its identity and activities.

Shortly after the vote, university leadership clarified that the student senate does not have the authority to determine the recognition, funding eligibility, or standing of registered student organizations. The administration confirmed that Hillel remains in good standing and fully eligible for funding.

The university also stated that it is taking steps to address the senate’s actions and ensure that it operates within its appropriate scope moving forward, while reiterating its commitment to combating discrimination and supporting all members of the campus community.

ACF acknowledges the university’s swift clarification and support for Hillel, but emphasizes that further action is necessary. Attempts to single out and penalize Jewish student organizations demand clear consequences to prevent similar incidents in the future.

ACF calls on The New School to thoroughly review this incident, hold those responsible accountable if policies were violated, and reinforce safeguards to ensure that student governance bodies do not engage in discriminatory actions.
