Statement of Support for the Chicago City Council’s Adoption of the IHRA Definition of Antisemitism

Alums for Campus Fairness (ACF) applauds the Chicago City Council for unanimously adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism and formally codifying it into law. With this action, Chicago becomes the second-largest city in the United States to recognize antisemitism as a form of discrimination under its municipal code.

ACF also commends DePaul University student Michael Kaminsky for his exceptional leadership in spearheading this effort. Kaminsky’s advocacy exemplifies the important role students can play in shaping public policy and standing up for their communities. His approach highlights the need for clear, consistent definitions when addressing antisemitism as a form of discrimination.

In 2024, Kaminsky, a prominent pro-Israel campus advocate, and Max Long were attacked by masked individuals on school grounds in an alleged hate crime. They have since filed a lawsuit against DePaul, which is currently ongoing, alleging that the university neglected its duty to safeguard Jewish students.

At a time of rising antisemitism in cities and on campuses, Chicago’s decision sends a powerful message that antisemitism should be named, understood, and addressed directly. We are encouraged to see elected officials and student leaders working together to confront antisemitism in a substantive way. We urge other cities and institutions to adopt the IHRA definition and take similarly decisive steps to protect Jewish communities.
